California Farmers Markets Growing Like Weeds

Published on: August 09, 2012

There was nearly a 10% increase in new farmers markets launched in the U.S. during the past year, and nowhere is the increase more apparent than California, the nation’s top food producer. We also lead the U.S. in farmers markets with around 830 markets–and more to come! Though newer markets don’t have proven longevity and we’ve actually seen a few in Southern California decide not to continue after trials, the future of farmers markets seems pretty rosy by all accounts.

Some markets are simply events where farmers set up stands in parking lots or parks to sell produce, and shoppers come to buy it. But with changing economic times and some of the highest unemployment in the nation, California markets also have added craft fairs with waiting lines for artists to participate and sell their wares. Add to that live musical entertainment, maybe some farmyard animals in a petting zoo, a bounce house for the kids and pony rides, and you have the equivalent of a carnival each week.

Consumers buying fresh produce have taken a big bite out of chain grocery store sales and have forced large grocers to re-think their strategies. In the fall voters will decide if they want big stores to list their GMO crops and foods. That may require an adjustment from processed food approaches to healthier options-style shopping, a win-win for consumers!
