Vapes (electronic cigarettes)  are all the rage. But like any new craze, they have caught some cities in California off-guard, not knowing what vapes are and if they should be allowed. Seal Beach is one such city. Even high school administrators, when examining the use of the e-cigarettes,  are getting quite a mouthful. Smoking isn’t allowed at California beaches, high schools and most parks but it doesn’t keep some teens from smoking.

In the U.S. this year consumers will spend an estimated $1 billion on battery-powered smokes, but the question remains as to how safe they are compared with tobacco smoke.

What’s a vape? It is an electronic cigarette with tobacco placed in a tube. The unit looks like a cigarette and the user smokes the ingredients like one, but there are several ingredients flowing through, including a liquid, to make the smoke effect feel cool — and smoke free.  Vapes are believed to contain many less carcinogenic ingredients than traditional cigarettes though they have been found to contain particles of metal and silicates that can cause breathing problems. They also can contain carcinogenic nitrosamines and other harmful impurities derived from the tobacco, as well as the additive diethylene glycol, an ingredient in antifreeze. They have not qualified for medicinal use to quit smoking, so the FDA is examining their contents & effects to regulate and tax them much like cigarettes.
