Though it’s likely the Pow Wow, a Native American gathering of dance and celebration, has been around for a very long time, sources trace its existence several hundred years to the 1600’s. It was originally called powwaw, pauwau or pauau, and throughout time, it has come to represent the passing down of traditions — from one generation to the next. While tribes report that today’s native youth are losing or have lost their roots — stories, dances and traditions — the pow wow has come to serve a greater cause of promoting Indian heritage among the larger American population.

In California you’ll find dozens of pow wows on or near tribal lands, but many are held at university campuses in the heart of major cities. Some have been around for decades while others are relatively new. The public is invited to these inclusive (and often free-admission) events where they can learn, be entertained, buy crafts and vendor foods. Are you ready to be Wowed! Head for a California POW WOW in 2017!
