This week the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, a 20 acre site with the first earthquake-proof Mandir (temple) in the world, celebrates Diwali (Festival of Lights) and Annakut (“mountains of food” festival.) Just like the more than one billion Hindus internationally, Californians (including actress Julia Roberts,) who practice Hinduism look forward to a 5 day celebration representing the triumph of good over evil with symbolic traditions such as lighting lights, eating food and other traditions.

• The northern Indian city of Ayodhya broke a Guinness World Record this November 7th by lighting more than 300,000 clay oil lamps on the eve of  the Festival of Lights.
