California’s Lively Literary Scene

RIVERSIDE — Riverside Dickens Festival (shown) is February 22-23, 2014.  The Mystery of Edwin Drood is this year’s theme. When Charles Dickens died in 1870 this novel was unfinished and his ending that may have identified the murderer is unknown. Oh, the possibilities!

California’s literary scene is a patchwork of events and festivals throughout the year. We have The Great Dickens Christmas Fair in San Francisco, the Dickens Festival in Riverside in February, Ojai WordFest in April, Salinas Steinbeck Festival in May,  and Shakespeare Festivals throughout the summer that take to the outdoor stage with presentations of the classics. You’ll also find several events and festivals honoring the California creator of Perry Mason, Erle Stanley Gardner. In California where acting brings great scripts to life it is no surprise that a popular way to celebrate famous authors is by hosting festivals in which their characters are re-enacted. As the summer crop of literary events is announced, we’ll compile a list of fun festivals and plays throughout the state.
