Cardiff Kook Run

On Super Bowl Sunday the roads along Coast Highway 101 in North San Diego are closed for the annual Cardiff Kook Run (cardiffkookrun.com), based on the statue of a surfer officially called “The Magic Carpet Ride” but known by locals as “Cardiff Kook” shown in left photo. A large percentage of residents in the area are surfers and they say that nobody surfs like this kook depicted on the statue. To poke more fun at what used to be an embarrassing icon when it was unveiled, but is now simply made fun of, the Super Bowl Kook Run has a costume contest in which participants are invited to dress in the nuttiest outfits!  Signs all over town announce road closures so prepare yourself if think you’ll be taking a Sunday drive. Here are more runs throughout the state.
