California, the Car Capital of the USA, is kind to cars — and vintage vehicles share the love. Old classics not only provide therapy for those with time on their hands and ability to fix things, but they also help raise money for special causes. This weekend’s annual Dr. George Charity Car Show in Indian Wells is an example. Founded in memory of a selfless oncologist who donated time for  treatment of those in need, the Palm Springs Cruisin’ Association’s biggest annual event raises money for Desert Cancer Foundation which Dr. Sebastian George co-founded before a 2002 traffic accident took his life. With so many charity car shows hosted throughout the state, it’s easy to participate by entering a car or supporting the cause through donations.

Car statistics

  • California has more registered vehicles than any other state — 14.5 million!
  • Texas is next with 8.5 million, then Florida with 7.75 million, and New York with 4.9 million vehicles. Trailing are Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Georgia.
