There are several ways to get to Catalina Island though driving a car is not one of them. The floating jewel out in the Pacific is rare among islands in California as it’s the only one large enough to handle thousands of residents and visitors.

Anyone who has flown into LAX, Long Beach or Orange County airports has possibly flown over Catalina Island. If you look down at the Pacific Ocean  just before landing, or right after take off, you may see it. Look for a landing strip. That’s Catalina Airport in the Sky.

Built in 1946, prior to this time the Island was accessible only to amphibious aircraft. The runway was built by blasting away the tops of two mountains and using the 200,000 truckloads of rock to fill the gap between them. The airport is often closed because of low cloud cover or other inclement weather. For updated Catalina airport weather information call (800) 255-8700.
