Chicken and Wine Wars

Arkansas is not taking California’s new chicken law lying down. When California enacted a voter-approved law this year requiring more cage space for egg-laying hens the new legislation also said that no state can sell their eggs in California unless they abide by the law. In an effort to fight back, the Arkansas House voted 57-19 to advance a bill that outlaws wine imports from any state that imposes a substantial burden on the Arkansas agriculture industry. The Arkansas Agriculture Department Secretary would determine what is burdensome under the bill, ordering the Director of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Division to sanction or revoke licenses of businesses that broke the law. While some fear there could be unwanted backlash from California commerce if its wines are banned in Arkansas, the Arkansas poultry industry is fighting mad and wants to send a message to California.
