While other cities wait till they turn 100 to have a shindig, Costa Mesans want to have their cake and eat it too. And that’s exactly what they do on their 60th birthday, celebrating with an entire year of special events (see: costamesasis60.com). On Oct. 12 & 13, 2013, they’ve brought back the Scarecrow Festival, a once honored tradition in the town that hosts one of the biggest and best farm events in the state – the Orange County Fair.  Costa Mesa is holding the Scarecrow Festival over at Goat Hill Junction where kids and adults can get a free train ride several times per month, all year long!  Another well-known Costa Mesa event, Orange County Market Place, will celebrate Halloween with its annual Hearse Parade which has featured Dr. Demento in past years. Costa Mesa is also home to South Coast Plaza, which boasts it has every store and boutique that you’ll find at Rodeo Drive.  If you’re not in or around Costa Mesa for the free celebration, here are some Scarecrow Contests throughout California, and Halloween events this weekend.
