County Line Not Always a Welcome Sign

Published on: July 13, 2012

Counties don’t put their best foot forward and they don’t roll out the welcome mat when you visit on a road trip. Instead, travelers see names such as Marin, Merced, Monterey, Kings and Fresno shown in photos, along with posted warnings about laws, speeding and emergencies. It’s enough to make you want to never stop.

The most common warnings include “Speed Checked by Radar” and “Radar Enforced”.  Then there’s the comforting “Emergency Call 9-1-1”. In Kings County you also get a mustard yellow sign warning “Subject to High Winds And Dust Next 16 Miles”. One of our favorite ominous signs warns, “Don’t pick up hitchhikers for next 30 miles.”  Are they warning about UFO aliens or  ax murderers, perhaps? The signs are posted in Monterey County.

There are 58 counties all posting county road signs for tourists to see their county entry points.  The signs are uniformly green with white lettering.   Here are some interesting facts about California’s counties that you may enjoy.
