People go NUTS over DUCKS! Left: Huntington Beach Duckathon is on at the Huntington Beach Pier in 2019. Right: The ducks flew the coop and won’t be back in Redding where the annual Ducky Derby has ended.
Ducks have a reputation for being big, boisterous and not always shy, which may be why people have adopted the rubber, yellow duck as a symbol of fun. People go quackers, in fact.
Last week, for instance, Crestline Chamber of Commerce held Rubber Ducky Derby at Lake Gregory. 2,000 adopted toy ducks were plopped into the lake for special causes. Also last weekend, Kiwanis Club of La Mirada held its annual “Going Quackers for Kids” rubber duck race to help youth.
This weekend you don’t need to keep your eye to the sky for the Santa Cruz Ducky Derby (Apr.27, 2019) hosted by Omega Nu, in cooperation with the City of Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation Department.
A race of a different feather takes place in Sutter Creek’s Minnie Provis Park the same day at Duck Dash run.
If beautiful birds are your thing, this weekend brings bird watching extreme at Point Reyes Station Birding & Nature Festival April 26-28 and Owens Lake Bird Festival April 26-28 in Lone Pine.
While duck races come and go there are still some you can drop in on, sponsor a duck and hope for good luck!
