When famous rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd sang, “Well I dig you Georgia peaches, makes me feel right at home,” they were probably referring to Georgia’s once dominant position as top producer of peaches in the U.S. But now they should be digging California peaches since it is the nation’s top peach growing state.

CALIFORNIA PEACHES

  • 2 types of peaches – clingstone (fruit enmeshed with seed, used in canning) and freestone (eaten as fresh fruit)
  • California Freestone varieties are harvested from April through October
  • California Clingstone peaches are available from mid-July to mid-September
  • California produces nearly 100% of the processing cling peaches in the Central Valley – San Joaquin & Sacramento Valleys
  • Cling peaches are almost solely used for canning and rarely found fresh
  • Sutter County, followed by Stanislaus, Yuba, Merced, Fresno, Butte and San Joaquin are top growing regions
  • 2 or 3 pickings per orchard based on color may be required since fruit does not grow uniformly
