California magicians left to right: Magician David Minkin, Opera-singing Magician Patrick Bell, and Magician Peter Morrison.

After watching opera-singing baritone Patrick Bell work his way out of a straight jacket while performing “Largo al factorum” (Figaro) from the Barber of Seville, I realized there’s more to magic than meets the eye. Billed as the only opera-singing magician in the world, this Opera-Kadabra (operakadabra.com) guy proved that magic can sound incredibly nice.  Indeed, magic comes in all shapes, sizes and sounds. David Minkin presents magic acts in Los Angeles in places with unique settings, usually paired with wine or other fine accompaniments.  Bell serves up his shows with amazing musical entertainment, having sung several years with Los Angeles Opera Chorus. And you’ll usually find Peter Morrison in San Francisco de-stressing audiences with comedy and magic that wows crowds.

TO SEE MAGIC IN CALIFORNIA:

  • See magic performances in San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco
  • Hire a magician for a party.
  • Visit the Magic Exhibit, “Behind Smoke and Mirrors: The History of Magic and Illusion”  which includes Houdini artifacts on display at Whittier Museum (whittiermuseum.org) through July 2013. The Society of American Magicians Hall of Fame & Magic Museum’s private collection not seen by the public for a number of years is on display while the organization continues to look for a permanent museum space in the greater Los Angeles area.
