SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. — This weekend Stern Grove Festival opens its 10 week concert series with a FREE Doobie Brothers concert on June 14, 2015. Sure, you could pay $57-$266 on June 13 and see the classic rock band at Ironstone Vineyards in Murphys, or wait a day and book it on over to San Francisco for the free concert in the park. The annual summer concert series in the Grove is part of a wonderful, unique gift given to the city of San Francisco more than 75 years ago by Rosalie Meyer Stern, who purchased Stern Grove in 1931 and gave it to the City of San Francisco in memory of her husband, Sigmund. The wise woman offered it to the city with a catch…there would always be “a free lunch” or in this case free concerts and cultural performances. The concert series each year features world class acts absolutely free. Part of the annual festival opening day celebration is the Big Picnic which isn’t free (it’s a fundraiser.) However, there are picnic tables awarded at each concert through a drawing process. This year’s 78th annual Stern Grove Festival features The Doobie Brothers, Randy Newman, Mary Chapin Carpenter and many more. Though Randy Newman sings “I Love LA”, all bets are off as to whether he’ll be changing his tune, singing San Francisco’s praises at his free concert on June 28! Another fantastic, free event in San Francisco this weekend is the North Beach Festival.
