Dragon Boat Races
Dragon Boats have been around for more than 2,000 years in China. Initially designed and built to appease the gods, races slowly grew out of the dragon boat traditions. In the US and Canada there are over 90,000 dragon boat race participants currently. California has clubs and competitions in San Diego, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Lake Gregory, Oakland and San Francisco. Very much a team sport, participants of all ages and skill levels can compete. Though it has yet to be classified as an Olympic sport, efforts to gain that status are underway. If you would like to start up your own dragon boat races, all you need is a local lake and investment in these specialized boats that cost several thousand dollars. They are mostly manufactured in China though you’ll find companies in the U.S. and Canada that make them. Here are the upcoming dragon boat races to look forward to!
