“Easter Eggs” at Peg Leg Smith Liar’s Contest this Weekend

Published on: April 03, 2012

Each year parents, politicians and even religious leaders propagate the idea that an oversized rabbit hops into your yard, home and local park, hiding candy eggs for girls and boys to discover. Sometimes if you find the Golden Egg you win a prize.

It’s a scenario not too different on Saturday, April 7, 2012 as people gather for the Pegleg Smith Liars Contest in Borrego Springs. Among the tales an Old West miner spun during his days out in the sun (before he died in 1866) was that there was a lost gold mine out in the desert, and if someone found it, they’d be rich. Each year people travel to the highway marker commemorating this salty character who was said to be a fantastic storyteller. They come from far & wide to participate in a contest, telling stories of their own. Some symbolically follow the suggestion on a road sign: “Let those who seek Pegleg’s gold add 10 rocks to this pile.”
