Fire in the Sky

If my beach town (Huntington Beach) is any indication of what people like most about the 4th of July, fireworks win, hands down. Even though it can take an hour to get to the beach to see the 22 minute show, and nearly two hours in traffic leave, over half a million people show up to watch fireworks launched from Huntington Beach Pier over the Pacific Ocean. Practically every popular fireworks show in California anticipates crowds.

4th of July Fireworks

  • BIGGEST: Tahoe South’s 4th of July Lights on the Lake Fireworks is the largest synchronized fireworks display west of the Mississippi. American Pyrotechnics Association rates the South Shore spectacular one of the top five displays in the nation. Starts at approximately 9:45 p.m. on July 4.
  • SMALLEST: Marin County only allows special permit fireworks seen at Marin County Fair nightly June 30 through July 4.
  • EASY TO SEE: San Franciso, San Diego, Marina del Rey bays  and Sacramento (River) offer opportunities to watch fireworks displays from many vantage points.
