Free Wheeling Days of Pleasure Piers and Cement Ships
One of California’s most unusual piers was created as a walkway to access a pleasure boat, a cement ship. The ship was originally designed for the WWI war effort but never got a chance to serve. The war ended and the vessel was transformed into a party boat that was docked offshore in Aptos (Santa Cruz County). The party only lasted two seasons till the builder of the project went belly up. Today, some 80 years later, you can still see the remains of the ship. Walk to the end of the pier to gaze down on the ship that you can’t access, but can see through a fence. Its glory days were short lived, but it still brings entertainment value as a unique attraction to those who visit Seacliff State Beach (parks.ca.gov) for swimming, sunbathing, surfing, hikes and camping.
