Gingerbread Houses, Castles, Woodies

The 2014 crop of gingerbread castles and creations are on public display in hotels and museums throughout California. Pictured:  Fairmont Hotel San Francisco’s famous annual two-story high Victorian house decorated with more than 1 ton of royal icing; Newport Beach’s Island Hotel annual Gingerbread Lobby Display this year is a beachin’ woody car surrounded by gift boxes, all made of gingerbread. Blame the Brothers Grimm fairy tale “Hansel and Gretel” for what’s now the gingerbread holiday craze.  Early German settlers brought  lebkuchenhaeusle – gingerbread house – traditions to the Americas.
