If you have any doubt about Sacramento’s Gold Rush heritage, it will be blown away like the dust cloud of horses stampeding through town during the annual Labor Day Weekend festival, Gold Rush Days. Now in its 14th year of paying homage to the city’s heritage, the event includes a Pony Express ride through the streets of historic Old Sacramento, but that’s just the beginning of total Old West immersion. Throughout four days of street entertainment you’ll experience cannon fire, a squatter’s riot, women’s suffrage parade, burning of the brothel, bands, food-eating contests, beer crawl, movies, games and costumed actors playing convincing roles of their ancestors who came to California, often to find gold. This fabulous, free event takes place August 30-September 2, 2013.
