Great Gifts in a Cookie Cutter World

In a cookie-cutter world where many holiday gifts are “made in China” there are a wealth of “made in California” holiday shopping festivals such as Sawdust Winter Fantasy in Laguna Beach.  Guests shop outdoors among scented eucalyptus trees in Laguna canyon, wandering along the sawdust-covered grounds while listening to holiday music and browsing artist kiosks — some with trees growing out of them!

Tips

  • If you see it and like it, ask the artist if there are more of the same item. Otherwise, you may return later and it’s gone.
  • Get business cards and contact information for things you like. Don’t count on event management to help you track down the artisan who sold you a bracelet, for instance.
  • If you like to barter, don’t do it in front of a crowd of people.
  • Shop California produce — olive oil, wine, artisanal cheeses, nuts, fruits and craft beers can be purchased online and shipped.
  • Investigate months ahead for vending opportunities.  Sawdust Festival and similar events have a lengthy selection process.
  • Bay Area event companies include: pacificfinearts.com | sresproductions.com | miramarevents.com
