The Irish have their day to celebrate on March 17 (St. Patrick’s Day). But the ultimate party animals who ‘Rock ‘yer Kilt’ are the Great Scots. This year is a special one for the Caledonian Club of San Francisco when they host their 150th annual Scottish Highland Gathering & Games on Sept. 5 & 6, 2015. The festival has the largest attendance of any Scottish games in the world! Starting the ball rolling in the season opener is Queen Mary’s Scots Festival Feb. 13-15. Rock Yer Kilt concert launches the weekend with bands Brick Top Blaggers, Wicked Tinkers and more.

California Scottish Festivals – games:

  • Caber Toss – The caber (wooden beam) approx. 19′ 6″ tall and 175 pounds is a long tree trunk, tapered smaller at one end. Raise the pole to a vertical position in your hands, smaller end down, and then throw it into the air and away from you. Toss the caber so that it turns end over end, falling directly away from you in the 12 o’clock position. Distance isn’t important.
  • Stone Put or Putting of the Stone – A stone weighing between 16 & 26 pounds is thrown for distance.
  • Weight Throw for Distance – Thrown in a field.
  • Weight Throw for Height  – Thrown over a bar.
  • Scottish Hammer Throw – A weight on a cane handle or shaft is thrown for distance.
