When guests show up at their local aquariums wearing spooky costumes for Halloween events, many have no idea that nature beat them to the punch. A cast of characters from the deep, dark, mysterious seas unveils surprisingly haunting appearances and names to match.

The coffin fish – some say it looks like death; spookfish – looks like a ghost or an off-world alien with its big black eye sockets; vampire squid; ghostfish; goblinshark… the list goes on. If you could create costumes to mimic these eerie water-world creatures, you’d surely win an award!

California’s aquariums offer a treasure trove of things to see and learn about. And aquarium staff like to engage the public in all the cool stuff at their access. If Halloween’s your thing, and aquariums are within your reach, SeeCalifornia’s made a list of events offered this season.
