Have you noticed cargo ships sitting off the California coast recently?

The world’s seventh-largest container shipper, South Korea’s Hanjin, filed for bankruptcy protection on August 31, 2016, and  some ports and port services have refused to accept their vessels.

  • National Retail Federation’s Jonathan Gold, Supply Chain and Customs Policy VP, said millions of dollars worth of merchandise needs to be on store shelves. It is aboard ships out on the ocean and some is sitting on U.S. docks waiting to be picked up.
  • “Right now, we are waiting to hear the final determination on bankruptcy proceedings and the implications to their current assets before we will be able to assess any impact,” said a Wal-Mart official.
  • “At this point, we are monitoring things and assessing the situation,” said Target spokeswoman Katie Boylan.
  • “Hanjin ships are being held up in Los Angeles,” Port of Oakland spokesman Mike Zampa said, adding that ships normally stop in Southern California to drop off imported goods before arriving in the East Bay to pick up exports for Asia.
  • There will be minimal impact for the Seafood Industry, according to Seafood News.
