If someone challenged you to come up with a unique festival concept, how many of California’s cities, citizens and groups would choose to celebrate poison oak? Only ONE! For mor than 30 years the wacky, wonderful Poison Oak Show in Columbia has celebrated a plant that people avoid like the plague. When you touch it unwittingly (as most people do) its oils cause your skin to swell up in welts that itch something fierce! Poison oak grows abundantly in the woods surrounding this historic gold rush town and the locals are just crazy enough to hold a contest with a show displaying arrangements made of this toxic stuff.
But maybe Columbia is simply ahead of its time. Poison ivy & poison oak Halloween costumes and home decor have become extremely popular during the past several years.
