Holiday Ice Skating

Put on your shorts, tank tops and go ice skating this week. In California sunshine and warm weather don’t get in the way of a good, old-fashioned holiday skate with friends and family. If you really want to get in the mood throw on some mittens and funny stocking caps, just for special effects! Ice skating is a great calorie burner–a person weighing 200 pounds who skates for 45 minutes can lose around 500 calories. Walking only burns around 235 calories.

The majority of seasonal rinks are opening next week while several have already begun to initiate fun:

  • On November 1 Santa Monica opened its annual ICE.
  • On November 4 Union Square in San Francisco launched its ice rink (in photo) which remains open through Jan. 18, 2016.
  • Embarcadero rink also opened on Nov. 4 in San Francisco.
  • Folsom Ice Rink was supposed to open today but has been delayed due to recent rain. They’re hoping for a weekend launch on Nov. 7 or 8.
