Honesty Test – Oakland is Most Honest, Venice Beach Not

Published on: August 22, 2012

Honesty was tested in Honest Tea’s National Social Experiment, which ranked the honesty of cities recently.   From August 8 to August 19, 2012, Honest Tea set up more than 50 unmanned pop-up kiosks in over 30 cities across the country, with each location stocked full of Honest Tea and Honest Ade. Signage at the stands offered bottled beverages for $1 each with payment based on the honor system, going into a clear box on-site. The outcomes were recorded using a customized digital tracking application by undercover observers nearby. Data collected for the National Honesty Index included geographic locations such as business districts, ball parks and beaches; observable characteristics like gender and hair color were tabulated.

Among the findings:

  • California has the most honest (Oakland) and dishonest (Venice) people
  • 93% of participants in America were honest
  • Oakland and Salt Lake City were both 100% honest
  • Women are 95% honest while men are 91% honest
  • Redheads are more honest than blondes and brunettes

California City Honesty Index- Percent of Beverage Takers Who Gave $1 Per Drink

  • Oakland 100%
  • San Francisco 97%
  • Palo Alto 93%  (people wearing suits  were 100% honest)
  • Anaheim 90%
  • Hollywood 88%
  • San Diego 87%
  • Los Angeles 79%
  • Venice Beach  76% – 2nd least honest location in U.S., just under Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn
