California Day of the Dead

  • Usually held on any given day or weekend around November 1-2, celebrations actually begin in October and end in November.
  • California city parks & recreation departments, libraries, non-profit groups, cemeteries, museums and art centers host Day of the Dead events.
  • There are likely hundreds of such events throughout California.
  • Day of the Dead or Dia de Los Muertos events range from free to fundraisers charging fees.

When Rebecca Harrington, Committee Chair of Dia de Los Muertos – Modesto, contacted SeeCalifornia.com, not only did she remind our website of this much celebrated event coming up but she also made us realize just how these events are produced. People such as Harrington pour their heart & soul into making Day of the Dead festivals happen, even soliciting family members to help get the job done so the show can go on.

This celebration takes place around Halloween and sometimes get mixed up with it, but really is quite different. Day of the Dead skull masks and costumes can confuse many of us, but they are designed to commemorate and celebrate loved ones who have passed. Observed in many parts of Mexico and Latin America, this event has taken California by storm — in some cities it is celebrated while Halloween isn’t! If it’s hard to get a grip on what it’s about, just go and see for yourself.  SeeCalifornia.com made this handy list of events…>
