US hotel guests hanging up and logging in –The way travelers communicate on the road has changed dramatically over the years and these changes become evident when analyzing the revenue earned by U.S. hotels from their guests for use of telecommunication devices and services. In lodging industry parlance, “telecommunications revenue” includes monies received from the guest use of hotel room phones, fax machines and internet connections.

Travelodge introduces new guestroom design–Benefiting from a $350 million capital investment this year, enhancements include new luxury king-size beds with an 800 pocket sprung mattress, and each spring designed to follow the natural contour of an individual’s body.

Southern California hot for hotel development as values exceed cost–SoCal is undersupplied with modern lodging products and many projects underway indicate that the economic environment is ripe for new hotel development. Hotel transactions in 2012 attained high prices per room, demonstrating the continued strong demand for Southern California hotels by investors and the feasibility of building new hotels, as values of existing product start to exceed development costs.

Hotel-retail mixed-use–Hoteliers are at the beginning of what looks like a renaissance of “hotel-retail mixed-use” development. Shopping center developers nationwide are exploring the feasibility of adding hotels to existing retail properties, while others are already implementing plans that have been in the pipeline. Some are adding hotels to the mix for new ground up development. Fueling this trend is research showing that both retailers and hoteliers make huge gains in revenue when they come together in the “hotel-retail mixed-use” environment.

Hotel La Jolla offers luxurious pet amenities–The Kimpton Hotel property in La Jolla, Calif. reopened in August 2012 after a dramatic $4 million design-centric transformation conceptualized by prominent designer Gulla Jonsdottir and La Jolla-based architect Claude-Anthony Marengo.  There are no size, weight or breed restrictions on pets, so if you can fit through the front door, you’ll be “purrfectly” accommodated.

Steady growth projected for US hotels through 2014–Revenue will increase during the next two years as increased travel spending from U.S. baby boomers, more incoming tourism from countries such as Brazil and China and little in the way of new supply points toward profits going up, up, up!
