Kids need parents desperately. But when mom or dad is in prison, the child gets no kisses, no hugs and no tucks into bed at night. Children with a parent in prison are often cared for by relatives such as grandparents unable to make the drive to a prison due to distance, expense and age. A non-profit organization invites caregivers and families to “Get on the Bus” for Mother’s Day trips to see incarcerated moms, and Father’s Day journeys to see dad. On the bus trip home following a four-hour visit, each child receives a teddy bear with a letter from their parent and post-event counseling.
