This weekend in the Central Valley city of Kingsburg they’ll be hoisting the Maypole into the air for the annual Kingsburg Swedish Festival. It’s a fun event with a parade, beauty queens and pancakes cooked on the griddle. On Sunday in San Diego’s Little Italy there will be musicians in the streets playing accordions similar to those used for Swedish music and dance. However, the Sicilian Festival is a different beast. They won’t be serving pancakes too much as you know Sicilians are really into tasty dishes with red tomato sauces. If you had to describe the differences between two festivals on the same weekend 400 miles apart, the Kingsburg fest is best thought of as wholesome family entertainment in a semi-rural setting, while San Diego’s urban street festival might be considered loud, filled with crowds and typically Sicilian. Expect lots of laughter as Sicilians love to joke around.
