In addition to the thousands of drummers using their drumsticks to perform at concerts and festivals on Labor Day Weekend, sticks and balls come into play at a variety of festivals you can make note of this week in California.

  • At Fort Bragg’s  Paul Bunyan Days Sept.1-4, 2017, the burley lumberjack who carries a big ax knows all about sticks. Wood’s his thing and something locals embrace in this neck of the woods known as California’s Redwood Coast.  Log Rolling Contests are an annual favorite, as well as the Logging Show with big cash prizes for:
    Axe Throw
    Single Buck Handsaw
    Obstacle Pole Powersaw
    Jack and Jill Handsaw
    Choker Setting
    Double Buck Handsaw
    Single Jill Handsaw
    Stock Chainsaw Bucking
    Jill and Jill Handsaw
    Horizontal Hand Chopping
    Pole Climb
  • Pleasanton’s 152nd Scottish Highland Gathering & Games Sept.2-3 features sticks and balls–all very big and heavy:
    Putting the Heavy Stone
    Scottish Hammer
    Caber
    Archery
    Piping & Drumming
    Kilted Mile Run
  • San Diego’s Little Italy hosts an annual Stickball Tournament taking place Sept. 2-3. It’s the ultimate game bringing sticks and balls together into one great sport. Players from New York and Puerto Rico come to challenge the San Diego Stickball teams — watch grown men grab a broom stick, table leg or any other kind of bat-like stick to a rubber Wilson ball and swing it out!
