Though the Jewish population makes up only 2.1% of the national population and approx. 3.2% in California, there are many events during Hanukkah – Chanukah 2013 that the public is invited to share in and enjoy. One of the biggest and best known events is the Menorah Lighting in honor of Bill Graham in San Francisco. Graham was a well-known (Jewish) rock concert promoter in the Bay Area who died in a helicopter crash in 1991. He fled from Germany and, in 1941, from France to escape the Holocaust. The Bill Graham Menorah Day Festival takes place December 1, 2013 in Union Square.  Throughout California you’ll find Menorah Lightings, much the same as Christmas Tree Lightings, over a number of days.

California Menorah Lighting Ceremonies 2013

  • Hanukkah is an eight day celebration November 27  through December 5, 2013 (the first day of Hanukkah is on Nov. 28, 2013.)
  • 2013 Hanukkah a once-in-a-lifetime chance to celebrate the first day of Hanukkah and Thanksgiving falling on the same day–something that has never happened before and will not occur again for almost 80,000 years!
  • The menorah is a freestanding seven-branched candelabrum you’ll see in variations. This year there’s a Lego menorah at L.A. Farmer’s Market, and a jelly bean filled menorah at Jelly Belly Factory in Fairfield.
  • Menorah lightings take place at ice rinks, downtown plazas, shopping centers and a variety of unique settings such as the Skirball Center in Los Angeles and next to the wharf & beach in Santa Cruz, where a train ride will be included.
