Peg Leg Smith Liar’s Contest this weekend at Anza Borrego State Park features the wildest stories and best storytellers from around the globe who trek to the desolate desert locale, hunting down Peg Leg Smith Historical Marker seven miles east of Borrego Springs on S-22. No tale is too outlandish but you better tell it well! The audience is a seasoned crowd that knows how to spin a good yarn. Each year on the first Saturday in April the liars, fibbers and storytellers converge in honor of a mountain man, prospector, and spinner of tall tales. Thomas L. Smith, better known as ‘Peg Leg’ Smith 1801-1866, reportedly had a gold mine which has been lost to mankind.
