National Night Out is celebrated in hundreds of communities in California on the First Tuesday in August, which is August 5, 2014. Pictured are participants in the City of Ontario, Calif.  National Night Out seeks to bring awareness to neighborhoods and individuals about security and safety in and around your home.

DO YOU KNOW…?

  • July and August are the most frequent months for break-ins.
  • 85% of break-ins are from non-professionals that are usually more desperate and dangerous.
  • Perpetrators are usually male, under 25 years of age looking for items that are small and expensive.
  • Break-ins usually occur in the daytime when occupants are at school or work.
  • Windows are the most frequent point of entry during warm weather months.
  • Favorite items include cash, jewelry, laptops, guns, digital cameras and small electronics.
  • Money is usually used to support a drug habit.
  • Thieves prefer easy access through unlocked doors or windows.
