Each year in early May Amtrak puts on a National Train Day (nationaltrainday.com) celebration in honor of the nation’s rail system. California didn’t become easily accessible until “golden spikes” were driven, completing the train tracks to the West Coast.  Hundreds of thousands of people began arriving in the Golden State when trains became available.

Train Day celebrations take place in San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Fresno, Dunsmuir and many cities. The public is invited to enjoy the festivities and activities taking place over several weeks. Here’s a list of California’s Train Day events.
