When the pole dance went mainstream several years ago, gyms, party vans, and all kinds of places equipped their facilities with this “must have” amenity. Gymnasts and professional dancers have found the pole adds another dimension to their workouts, and some former athletes credit the pole dance with luring them out of retirement. It’s hard to say for certain what kind of shelf life this sport will have. Last year an effort by pole dancers to get the sport sanctioned for the 2016 Olympic Games was underway. This year pole dancing championships are taking place throughout the U.S. with the Pacific Pole Championships happening Feb. 28-March 1, 2015, public invited to this ticketed event. Finalists from contests in the Central, South, Atlantic, Northwest and Pacific regions compete in Los Angeles for the U.S. National Pole Championships Nov. 7-8.
