Eric Ahrendt of Orinda, Calif. won 1st place prize in an annual contest, 2015 Freeze Frame Photo Competition, sponsored by the Tri-Valley Conservancy (trivalleyconservancy.org). The picture of bucolic Joan’s Farm and Pumpkin Patch was selected because it showcases the diverse and striking natural beauty of the Tri-Valley that the non-profit organization strives to protect, according to contest judges. Of course, pumpkins are extremely popular icons this time of year. Photo contests abound in California. County fairs, cities and chambers of commerce offer them, as well as California Watchable Wildlife. Prizes vary — sometimes bragging rights are your reward.
