If you can’t stand the heat, get into the shade today–even at the beach! The most susceptible to heat are seniors, babies, toddlers, the obese, and those with chronic medical conditions. Signs and symptoms of heat-related illness include dizziness, confusion, fainting, headache, nausea, weakness, muscle cramps, seizures, and even coma! Treatment for milder heat-related illness involves moving the individual out of the hot environment and implementing cooling measures. Two of California’s neighboring states lead the nation in heat related deaths. Arizona comes in first, followed by Nevada. Heat related deaths are relatively small (less than 1 in 100,00). In California, Death Valley holds the record for hottest temperature recorded at 134 degrees Fahrenheit. It set a world record until 1992. You can see the world’s tallest thermometer in Baker, Calif., where temps exceed 100 degrees most summer days.
