The 2017-2018 Gold Rush Poinsettia pictured remains one of the newest, coolest holiday flowers for Californians who hold the Gold Rush era near and dear to their hearts. Gold Rush was introduced last year as a Top Pick by international grower, Dummen Orange, which acquired the famed Ecke Ranch in Encinitas more than five years ago. This poinsettia’s bracts are yellow-to-golden in color.

As Christmas parties and visits with friends & family continue in the days before December 25, poinsettias remain one of the best thank you gifts to give hosts, thanks to their affordable price and seasonal appeal. Here are a few tips on selecting a healthy plant and caring for it.  Some new 2018-2019 offerings, and late growing poinsettias are ideal for gift giving now:

New this year!

  • Burning Ember
  • White Wonder
  • Antares
  • J’adore Pink

Late Season (8.5-9 Weeks) Options!

  • Antares: A vigorous variety, heat resistance with medium large size, intense red bracts. Very strong branches, ideal for warm climates and late production.
  • Maximax: Bright red orange variety, good branching, abundant cyathia, high level of consumer appeal.
  • Euroglory Red: Dark red, easy to produce, medium size bracts and suitable for long transportation.
  • Scandic Red: Dark red, longer response time.
  • Prestige Sunrise: Dark green leaves and large showy horizontal bracts. Its natural stem strength and v-shaped architecture eliminate stem breakage.
  • Primero, including Red Glitter, Red, White or Pink: Striking colors with horizontal bracts, heat tolerant.
Jingle Bells Rock: Highly adaptable series with strong branching habit and V-shape architecture that is resistant to stem breakage. Not sensitive to late season stretch, very good shelf life.
