Each year on July 12 visitors head for the Point Reyes Seashore Historic RCA Coast Station KPH to commemorate the closing of commercial Morse operations in the US. This historic station’s radio equipment which dates to the World War II-era, comes back to life for Night of Nights.

On July 12, 1999 grizzled, tough looking old radiomen had tears in their eyes facingĀ the solemn prospect that an era had ended. But another thing happened on that day as the Maritime Radio Historical Society formed with the commitment to honor the men and women who made the profession of radiotelegrapher one of honor and skill. They restored “The Wireless Giant of the Pacific” and have brought it back to life each year, rising out of the static on the maritime bands. The public is invited to this moving event put on by a bunch of radio squirrels, they jokingly callĀ themselves!
