Ragfest Celebrates Rag — Syncopated Music Created by Scott Joplin

FULLERTON, CALIF.–If you’ve never heard of Scott Joplin, a composer and piano player from Sedalia, Missouri who created a musical fad called “rag”, the Ragfest in Fullerton, Calif. will get you up to speed and have you on your feet with its syncopated sounds and dance steps. Ragtime was first introduced at the turn of the 20th century. It was made popular with the syncopated music created by pianist Scott Joplin, known as the King of Ragtime. The “Made in America” musical creation (and predecessor to jazz) is written in 2/4 or 4/4 time meter called “rag.” If composed in this style the effect that can be applied to any meter. Musicians can convert songs into ragtime by changing the time values of the melodic notes, thus “ragging” the song.
