Like the flowers that once filled Central Coast fields in concert with Lompoc Flower Festival, the swallows that returned to San Juan Capistrano Mission in large numbers are still celebrated even though there haven’t been many nesting at the mission in recent years. At the annual mission festival you may find children dressed like swallows and you can hear about the plan to bring the swallows back. On March 12, 2016 Swallows Day Parade, the largest non-motorized parade in the U.S., takes place on streets outside the mission. A week later on March 19 ‘Return of the Swallows Festival’ at the mission includes a presentation of a proposed nest wall with ready-made plaster nests to get those high-energy, time-bankrupt swallows back.  Recordings of swallow sounds are played to attract the birds known to use existing nests to save time & energy.
