Each September people come together on Point Loma to celebrate the arrival of Portuguese sailor/explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo and his discovery of San Diego on September 28, 1542 under the flag of Spain. At the  Cabrillo Festival a re-enactor climbs out of his ship and onto shore, just like Juan Cabrillo stepped into history as the first European to set foot on the West Coast of what is now the U.S.  “Cabrillo,” his soldiers and a priest sail into the bay on San Salvador (The Californian), and once again claim the land for Spain.

The free admission festival with dancing, music, speeches, vendors, costumes, and some great food you can buy (such as paealla)  takes place on September 27-28, 2014. It is one of many annual events at Cabrillo National Monument, which was established in 1913 and turned 100 in 2013.
