Ecology and conservation probably would have happened in Santa Barbara, anyway, but out of a 1969 oil spill came a host of legislation, regulation, compensation and a focus on the environment. One of the city’s shining examples of turning trash into treasures is a non-profit organization called Art from Scrap. Since its formation over 20 years ago, the facility has grown and reached hundreds of thousands of consumers young and old.

When visiting Santa Barbara, you can shop at the ReUse retail store which has partnered with hundreds of local businesses to keep tons of materials out of the landfill. You and your children can sign up for art classes that both entertain and educate. Gallery exhibits and special fundraising events showcase extraordinary artwork you’ll find amazing. And, if you’re so inclined, you can visit the Watershed Resource Center near the beach and maybe pitch in during a beach cleanup. For info, see: artfromscrap.org
