While most will enjoy a day at the beach, a walk in the woods, a festival or fair, or picnic munching on favorite foods, firefighters from around the U.S. continue their successful stand against nature–and they seem to be getting the upper hand. This Labor Day Weekend provides the perfect opportunity to think about those who are busy saving–saving beaches,  saving forests and even saving lives. It is truly a labor of love for all those working toward the cause of saving.

Several days ago as the Rim Fire in the Sierra Nevadas threatened the biggest trees the world, fire crews vowed to save the giant sequoias.  More than 4,900 firefighters battling the blaze at a cost of close to $50 million to date,  are just doing their job, of course. But when you talk to the women and men involved in the effort, you’ll hear stories of passion. Wearing heavy gear in 100+ degree heat, sometimes risking your life, and fighting fires when your family is home celebrating holidays sounds a little crazy.  Sure, the pay is good when you score that big job, but there are occupational hazards–and you can’t take the money with you when you die, can you? In general when you meet people who select careers that involve “saving,” you’ll find that they are grateful they get paid for following their passion.

When you think about those special trees that have been around a few thousand years and are so beloved they even have names, you can’t help but feel thanks for the people fighting to save them on Labor Day Weekend in a true labor of love!
