The Sutter Buttes, a small complex of eroded volcanic lava domes rising out of the plains of the Central Valley just outside Yuba City reach approx. 2,130′ into the sky. A foundation named in honor of the Maidu who lived in the mountain range’s shadows for thousands of years and called them Esto Yamani, which means “the Middle Mountain”, leads hikes in the Sutter Buttes, working with private land owners who grant access to The Middle Mountain Foundation. For prices and registration to these hikes that accept a limited number of participants, see middlemountain.org.
