165 Years of Smoke in California

Pictured: California’s smoky Labor Day Weekend 2013. Smoke isn’t a new phenomenon. Here is a newspaper article describing smoke 165 years ago:

Unusual Phenomenon – LOS ANGELES STAR – April 20, 1851
It is now about six days that we have in this and the surrounding country been the spectators of unusual phenomenon, which, from its peculiarity, has given occasion to manifold surmises, conjectures, speculations and rumours. The atmosphere has been so filled with smoke as to confine the vision within a small circumference. And as the smoke was wanting in those aerial properties which affect the eyes and nostrils, there were not many who denied the assertion that it was smoke.

  • Spare The Air Day was called on Aug.19, 2016 in Yolo and Solano Counties.
  • Las Vegas issued an air quality advisory from California’s wildfire 200 miles away.
  • Doctors for Climate Health Campaign declared California’s air quality is in critical condition and action must be taken.
  • Ozone exceeded federal standards on 91 days so far this year.
  • In June, only four days had healthy air across the Southern California basin.
  • From 2005 through 2010, western states cut ozone-forming air pollutants 21%, but a drop was offset by China’s 21% rise.
