Last weeks’s top grossing box office hit was the new release, “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes”.  It’s the story of a growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar, and threatened by a band of human survivors. Trailing behind in the #2 spot was “Transformers: Age of Extinction” about a mechanic and his daughter who make a discovery that brings down Autobots and Decepticons. This is the summer of sci-fi thrillers and comic book heroes ranging from Godzilla to Spiderman, X-Men and Captain America.  For those who like films that dig beneath the surface, there are several film festivals alternatives in California! They’re  not this nation’s top-sellers, but they offer thought-provoking alternatives…

  • SANTA BARBARA: The Wave Film Festival, July 16-20, 2014, 11 brand new French films
  • SAN FRANCISCO: Japanese Film Festival July 19-27, 2014
  • SACRAMENTO: Japanese Film Festival, July 18-20, 2014
  • SAN FRANCISCO: San Francisco Jewish Film Festival, July 24 – August 11, 2014
